  •   Senior Kirsty Gargiulo 2nd team All-County - 800

  •   Junior Cara Brenn 3rd team All-County - PV

  • Jones’s winning time at the County Championship of 9:41.0 not only secured his first county title, but also established a new school record in the event. The previous time of 9:54 was set by current Georgetown-student and SHS class of ’11, Thomas Chin.

Jones narrowly missed adding a second title as well at the Sectional meet, but he was just passed at the line and finished second in the 1600 in a time of 4:36.31. Other qualifiers for the boys at the Group 2 meet were Ryan Hughes (400m), Mitchell Booth (1600m), and Captain Austin Fern (HH and HJ). Both Jones and Hughes finished in the top 6 and advanced to the Meet of Champions.

McIlroy secured her first sectional title (to go along with numerous County titles) this winter by leading from wire-to-wire in the 1600 and besting an all-state runner from Voorhees. Also starring at Sectionals and advancing to the Group Championships were Captain Kirsty Gargiulo (800m), Rebecca Cummings (800m), Cara Brenn, setting a new Pole Vault record of 8’, and the 4x400 relay team of Gargiulo, Cummings, Felisa Della Santi, and Eowyn Lashell. At Groups, McIlroy was the lone advancer to the Meet of Champions.

Now the Hilltoppers look forward to an exciting spring season that starts this Saturday with the Summit Relays.

This year’s field looks the most competitive as many new schools will be attending what has become the biggest and best meet of early April. Both the boys and girls squads will be missing some bodies due to vacation, but many young Hilltoppers will make their presence felt.

On the Girls-side, Mendham, Westfield, Morris Hills, Pope John, and the Hilltoppers will be looking to better their qualifying times for the Penn Relays. The Hilltoppers will be looking to qualify for the 6th time out of the past 7 years in either the 4x800 or DMR. The loaded field in the races will help.

West Orange and Passaic Tech will be leading the charge in the sprints, hurdles, and jumps.

This may be the deepest field in the boys competition. With Westfield, South Brunswick, Pope John, Delbarton, Livingston, Mendham, and Randolph coming to

town, many meet records may fall. An event to keep an eye will be the pole vault where few Meet of Champions competitors will renew their rivalry. There is a good chance someone clears 15’!

The weather forecast looks favorable. The sun will be out. We just need all the Summit T&F fans to spread the word and come out in their maroon and gold and support.
