Summit Free Market is Booming

Summit Free Market is the perfect place to donate quality used items or pick up great deals--all for free!

Last Saturday was the first of the two Summit Free Market events this spring...and it was very busy. People brought loads of great merchandise including furniture, bicycles, children's toys, household goods and sports equipment. Those items and more moved quickly right out the door to enthusiastic recipients who were delighted with their finds.

And it's not over yet. This Saturday, April 27, is the second and final Summit Free Market event for the spring. The event will take place at the Transfer Station from 8 am to 3 pm. Summit residents are welcome to bring unwanted, reusable items to share, and take whatever they want. It’s all free!

The Summit Free Market is a student-run initiative planned and led by a group of Summit High School students with volunteer help on the day of the event from the Summit High School and Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School students. Seasonal events are held every fall and spring at the Transfer Station on New Providence Ave., in addition to the online www.summitfreemarket.org that is available year-round. To date, the Summit Free Market has saved over 46 tons of unwanted, reusable items from landfills or the incinerator since its creation in 2009.

Summit High School junior Claire Harrison, chair of the Summit Free Market committee, says, "Summit Free Market has really turned into a community event, and the first spring date this year had the best turnout we've seen yet. Not only were high-quality items brought and taken, but there was a general sense of support from the residents for the continued growth of the effort. It was wonderful to hear such positive feedback." So plan to stop by. Maybe that finishing touch to your living room or your latest creative inspiration will come from Summit Free Market.  Hope to see you there!
