By Beth Lovejoy, on behalf of the Summit Environmental Commission

April is a busy month full of green activities and workdays. Take a look to see what you and your family would like to attend.

On Monday, April 1, the Zoning Board will review the revised site plan for Summit's Community Garden, to be located near Overlook Hospital. With 45 plots, the garden will be a heathful addition to Summit. Attend the Zoning Board meeting to express your support, and stay tuned for more information.

Passaic River Greenway workdays, April 13 and 20. The ambitious Passaic River Greenway project is moving along nicely. When completed, the greenway will have walking trails, cleared and marked well, from Mount Vernon Avenue to Risk and Passaic Avenues. Volunteers are needed on Saturdays, April 13 and 20, to help shovel gravel, pick up trash and other debris, spread mulch and remove invasive plants. If you would like to help, email volunteer coordinator Priya Kubair at priyakubair@yahoo.com.

Daffodil Day at Reeves-Reed Arboretum, Saturday, April 13, 11 AM-4 PM. Always a popular event, Daffodil Day includes spring-themed games, nature crafts, and even a Flower Fairy and Woodland Elf parade through the Daffodil Bowl.

Earth Day Clean-Up, Saturday, April 20, 9 AM-noon. Earth Day 2013 is Monday, April 22, and Summit's annual earth Day Clean-Up is scheduled for Saturday, April 20 (raindate: Sunday, April 21). Enjoyed by many different groups and individuals in recent years, the Clean-Up typically involves a number of Summit locations that are in need of sprucing up. From collecting garbage to removing invasive species to spreading mulch and gravel, the projects undertaken make Summit a more beautiful and safer community. Among the sites being considered for this year are Wilson Park, Martin’s Brook and the open space areas surrounding the Transfer Station, with particular focus on the Passaic River trail near the Transfer Station. Community service groups, scout troops, school groups, families and individuals can participate and be assigned a location by emailing summitearthday2013@gmail.com.
