Meet Rabbi Stuart Gershon: Keeper of the Dream

Temple Sinai Rabbi founded the Darfur Genocide Rescue Committee of Summit.

Rabbi Stuart Gershon is one of the people is committed to ending genocide.

And this year he was honored with one of the five Keeper of the Dream awards for his efforts to help end genocide in Darfur and raise awareness about diversity and tolerance.

"I feel deeply honored and very humbled to be in such high company–both present and past," Gershon said. This years other winners include Rev. Denison Harrield, Jr. of Wallace Chapel AME Zion, Susan Hairston, Janet Maulbeck and Emile George.

Gershon, who has been the the rabbi at Temple Sinai for 16 years, is not only founder and tri-chair of the Darfur Genocide Rescue Committee of Summit but also co-chair of the New Providence Diversity Task Force.

"I have long thought the greatest joy in life is to help another person get more joy out of their life," he said.

Before coming to Summit, Gershon served for five years as thr associated Rabbi at Temple Emanuel in Worchester, Mass and was the first Rabbi ever appointed the chairperson of Worchester Jewish Federation's Jewish Education committee.

This year's five award winners were honored Monday during the 12th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service which brought the community together for more than 35 community service events around the city.

"This is Dr. King's legacy to us," Gershon said. "This is what he wanted for us to live our lives."
