September is Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad Month

The Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad will soon be conducting its annual fundraising efforts.

At Wednesday night's Common Council meeting, Mayor Glatt read a proclamation designating September as "Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad Month."

The Proclamation read:

"WHEREAS, Health and Safety are paramount to a sound community; and WHEREAS, since July 28, 1962, the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad members have provided a public service to our community in support of health and safety; and WHEREAS, the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad members have given an untold number of hours of service to Summit residents and patrons of our businesses, medical institutions and stores, and

WHEREAS, the efforts of the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad members regarding volunteerism and in providing free services should not go unrecognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, I Jordan Glatt, Mayor of the City of Summit do hereby proclaim the month of September, 2011 as Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad Month, in the City of Summit in recognition of the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad and the importance of all the good deeds contributed by its many volunteers for 49 years, and I ask all citizens to join me in praising these volunteers and lending the Squad your financial support."

At the presentation, squad president Steve Mortenson pointed out that the Squad had two crews available throughout the duration of Hurricane Irene, but that just scratches the surface of what the volunteers perform for the city every day.

According to John Christmann, VP of the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad, the squad has 60 active highly trained members who are on call for Summit 24 hours a day 365 days a year.

“Summit is fortunate to have as many volunteer First Aid Squad members as it does and to be so close to Overlook Medical Center,” Christmann said.

In one week’s time, the squad will be sending Summit residents a mailer requesting support, he said. The Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad is not a part of city services; it raises funds through donations.

“Donations go toward buying new equipment, such as new trucks and gear,” Christmann said, adding “ Summit has been very good to us.”
