Summit Student Exchange Program Needs Host Families

Ten exchange students arriving next week are currently without hosts.

The Summit based Academic Adventures in America is a non-profit student exchange program founded in 1988. The program relies on local volunteer host families to welcome students from all over the world. This year, according to AAIA director, Rose Jackson, there are still 10 students without hosting for this summer. She is hoping to find host families in Summit, New Providence, Berkeley Heights, Millburn and Short Hills.

"The students are 13 to 18 years old, and are from Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, and Taiwan," Jackson wrote in an email to Patch. The students arrive July 9 and stay for three weeks. The stay includes daily English lesson and afternoon classes. The group is expected to take day-long trips to New York City, the shore, Princeton, Jersey Gardens shopping center and a three-day trip to the Washington, D.C. area.

Jackson says if area residents would like to help out, all they would have to do is "Provide a welcoming atmosphere, a bed, and three meals a day."

We have hosted many students through this program over the last 12-13 years and it has always been a very positive experience. Not sure whether we are available to help out this year, but I highly recommend the program!

Thanks for the co-sign, Terri. I'm sure the folks at AAIA appreciate it.
