Five Summit investors restore a Victorian-era mansion with a history that's over 100 years old.
Summit residents know that their city is celebrated for its one-of-a-kind shops, Zagat-rated restaurants, and renowned businesses. And as of last month, "executive inn boutique" can also be added to that list. Last month, the DeBary Inn officially re-opened for business on Springfield Avenue, welcoming a diverse group of clientele and perpetuating a history that began in the late 1800s. The inn was purchased in September 2009 by five Summit partners who included one of the city's most recognizable citizens, TV personality Jim Cramer of CNBC's Mad Money. In fact, Cramer discussed the recent acquisition with Martha Stewart during a Nov. 9 appearance on The Martha Stewart Show: "(I) bought an inn," Cramer said. "It was one of those things …

Hunterdon County businessman one of two to challenge congressman in Republican primary.
In a theme common to political challengers nationwide this year, Hunterdon County businessman David Larsen said his frustration with Washington is what is behind his Republican primary challenge to U.S. Rep. Leonard Lance (R-Hunterdon County). Larsen, the owner of a family window and doors business, said government spending, along with decisions in such areas as climate change and health care have gotten him into the race. He also notes a desire of the need to have turnover in the House to move out what he describes as professional politicians, a category where he placed Lance. "I am fed up with the out of control government," Larsen said. "They are spending like drunken sailors." Larsen has centered much of his platform on federal …
Homeowners on Woodland Avenue spoke about the need for sidewalks on the busy street during public comment at last week council meeting.
A public meeting will be held tonight at 7 to discuss the possible installation of sidewalks to Woodland Avenue betweem Bedford Road and the Canoe Brook Country Club. The meeting will be held in the council chambers at city hall. The installation of sidewalks has been extremely contentious the last several months with the residents of Woodland Avenue divided between the enhanced safety for children walking to school if sidewalks are installed and those who feel sidewalks would alter the character of the neighborhood and their landscapes. Marybeth Robb of Woodland Avenue pleaded with council at the March 2 council meeting to put the issue of her street's lack of sidewalks on the agenda. Robb, along with two other Summit residents, said that…
The Hilltoppers give a great effort, but fall to No. 1 seed Malcolm X. Shabazz, 64-37.
NEWARK–The Summit girls basketball team could have dreaded Monday's NJSIAA sectional final against the nationally-ranked Shabazz Bulldogs, but they didn't. Instead, Summit played with confidence, determination, and a self-belief that was inspiring to both the coaching staff and the fans. "All morning, and even yesterday in practice, we felt like we were going to win this game," Summit head coach Brian Erickson said. The Hilltoppers played a tremendous first half and trailed by only four points, 30-26, at halftime. An exceptional 24-2 Bulldog run in the third quarter, however, ultimately put the game out of Summit's reach, and Shabazz won by a final score of 64-37. "We played so well in the first half. I really couldn't have asked them for …

Beth Kinney details what $158,000 in additional cuts to the Department of Community Services would mean for residents.
Beth Kinney, director of the Department of Community Services, detailed what an additional $158,000 in budget cuts would mean for residents. Kinney outlined several options council has for where they want the cuts to come from, including switching from rear yard trash pickup to front-yard for a savings of $10,000 this year and then $130,000 a year after that. But these savings come at a cost, she said. Front-yard garbage removal effects the ambiance of the community and causes inconvenience for many of the city's residents. Phyllis Sank, a resident on Norwood Avenue, said many residents, especially seniors, will have trouble bringing their garbage cans to the curb. "I think it's a service that speaks to the quality of life in Summit," she …

Bagger says governor to address fiscal issues from local governments along with state government in budget.
Gubernatorial chief of staff Rich Bagger is remaining mum as to the specifics of Gov. Chris Christie's soon-to-be-released budget proposal and the impact on local governments and school districts. Bagger said the budget, which Christie is due to announce on March 16, is still being worked on, including sections regarding state aid to municipalities and school districts. He said cuts are being made to the budget across the board in order to address the multi-billion dollar budget deficit facing the state. "Every part of the state budget is under scrutiny," he said. Christie last month cut $475 million in state aid to school districts for the remainder of the current state budget year, which ends on June 30. The cuts, which included a …
Local kids help raise $9,000 for New Eyes for the Needy with a charity rock concert.
Glasses and hard rock teamed up on Saturday for the second annual Kids Rock for Vision concert to raise money for New Eyes for the Needy. The concert, held at St. John's Lutheran Church in Summit, featured young musicians from the area strumming power chords and wailing in the vein of Axel Rose for a crowd of friends, family and rock enthusiasts. "It's just an awesome time to spend with your friends and family listening to local bands," said Sam Taggart, a senior at Morristown Beard and chair of the event. "Last year we raised almost $8,000 and I had no idea we could do so much for an organization with just a concert." This year, with the addition of more bands, the concert brought in $8,701, nearly a $1,000 increase from last year, …

Jones won the Meet of Champions in Toms River in February.
For the first time in Summit High School history the school has a Meet of Champions winner in the high-jump event in junior Mark Jones. He jumped 6 feet, 8 inches for his first place finish in Toms River at the end of February. Standing 6 feet, 6 and ¾ of an inch tall, and with parents who were both high-jumpers at Cornell, Jones seems to have been destined for high-jumping greatness. His father, Bob Jones, was the first high jumper to hit the 7 foot mark in New Jersey as a student at East Brunswick High School in 1977. Mark Jones' personal best is currently 6 feet 10 inches, but his goal is to match his father by jumping 7 feet. "Right now, I'm just focusing on 7 feet," Jones said. "That's kind of a mile-mark for high school jumping. From…

Hilltoppers beat Willingboro 44-37 to advance to NJSIAA sectional finals.
SUMMIT–Saturday night was a big night for the Summit girls basketball team. With a 44-37 win over Willingboro in the NJSIAA sectional semifinals, the Hilltoppers captured their 23rd victory of the season to advance to the finals. The win also represented Summit head coach Brian Erickson's 100th win as the team's coach, and the final time that seniors Michelle Burian, Emily Cristaldi, and Cassie Hall would play in their home gymnasium. "I'm sad that this was my final game here, but I'm more excited that we get to move on to the finals," Cristaldi said. "We couldn't have done it without the crowd's support," Hall said, describing the gym's standing-room-only crowd. "This was the first game where we've had a crowd like that. Things could have…
