Letter to Editor: Mirabella Stresses Support for Veterans

Union County Freeholder chair asks all residents to commemorate Memorial Day by connecting with U.S. Military veterans.

As Memorial Day approaches, our thoughts naturally turn to the sacrifices that have been made by Union County residents while serving in the U.S. military. Each year on this day, thousands of Union County residents from all walks of life, including my colleagues on the Freeholder Board and many County employees, join in commemorative ceremonies and activities to keep the memory of the deceased alive in our hearts. One of Union County’s long-running traditions is the distribution of tens of thousands of American flags to veterans’ groups and civic organizations like the Boy Scouts. Members of these groups fan out across the cemeteries of Union County each Memorial Day to ensure that every veteran’s grave is visited, recognized and honored. …

Mr. Mirabella, How come your brother was not prosecuted, and allowed to merely resign from the Garwood Police Department, while someone like Off. Brian Thomas and Lt. Richard Tierney are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law?   more ›

Booker, Christie Ham It Up for Video

Mayor and governor have fun with their images

Just because they're the state's two most prominent politicians doesn't mean they don't have a sense of humor. The office of Gov. Chris Christie yesterday released a lighthearted video co-starring Newark Mayor Cory Booker as a peripatetic go-to guy, riffing off his now national-scale image as a man of action following his rescue of a neighbor from a burning building several weeks ago. As the Democratic mayor of the state's largest city is depicted doing everything from coming up with a spare guitar for Bruce Springsteen to catching a falling baby, a faux-frustrated Christie hisses "Booker!" The video was produced for the New Jersey Press Association's Legislative Correspondent's Club show. Click on the video above to see the Cory and Chris…

Paid Parking Ordinance OKd for Downtown Summit

Residents and merchants filled the council chambers to share opinions about Summit's new paid parking plan.

Paid Shopper Parking: Although several residents spoke out against a move to abolish the free shopper parking at the lots on Deforest Avenue, the ordinance passed 6-1. Councilman Pat Hurley was the lone dissenting voice calling the move risky since downtown shoppers only would have 30 mins. of free parking versus 2 hours. "I can't support this," he said of the ordinance.  Councilman Dr. Robert Rubino, who voted for the ordinance agreed that free paid parking was a topic of sensitivity. "Thirty minutes might not be enough," he said about the unpaid time shoppers would get under a new parking system. Rubino said he was glad the council was moving forward on the issue, but that flexibility was key. "We try to compromise," he said. Effect on …

I applaud Mr. Hurley's dissenting vote - I have been previously critical of Mr. Hurley (his comments directed at the BOE) but fully support his thinking on this matter. As stated in the above comment this was "a done deal after the election" which is truly unfortunate. With the fragile state of our economy taking this on is quite a risk to impose upon Summit. I am sure the SDI expressed their …   more ›

Summit City Council Recognizes Passing of a Legend

Edward S. Olcott was remembered in an obit handed out by City Administrator Chris Cotter during the Tuesday, May 16 Common Council Meeting.

Summit lost one of its giants last week — former councilman and 55-year resident, Ted Olcott passed away on May 7th, he was 86 years old. Ted's contributions to the City were extraordinary; in 1968 he served as chairman of the then newly formed Housing Authority at a time when there was still considerable substandard housing in Summit. He was a member of the Planning Board, the Mini-Bus Planning Committee, the Charter Study Commission and the Mayor's Blue Ribbon Committee on the Collins Plan, a development that was proposed for the train station. He was instrumental in the creation of the City's first Strategic Plan and served as chairman of Summit 2005, a long-range planning project for the City, later named "Shaping Summit Together." For…

Diamond Pet Food Recalls Dog Food

Kirkland Signature Foods is one of nine different brands recalled by the manufacturer.

Diamond Pet Foods has expanded a voluntary recall to include batches of nine brands of dry pet food formulas manufactured between Dec. 9, 2011 and April 7, 2012 due to potential Salmonella contamination. A local reader asked about the recall, so Patch is providing this information from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). You can sign up for recall alerts from the FDA online, or subscribe to an RSS feed from the administration. April 2012, Diamond Pet Foods initiated three voluntary recalls of Diamond manufactured dry dog food. Although none of the additional products being recalled have tested positive for Salmonella, the company is pulling them from store shelves as a precaution. The company stated: “We have taken corrective …

Photo of the Day: Gloomy Tuesday

Despite the wet weather, two Summit students chat away the afternoon on Springfield Avenue.

Taking a break from a rainy day, Summit High School student Christin Martins and her pal Todd Welsh, a SHS grad who attends Curry College, sit on Springfield Avenue chatting away the afternoon. Martins has just finished her AP exam in history and government and was too shy to say whether or not she aced it. Martins was ready for Friday's prom, however. "I'm so excited," she said with a wide smile defying the gloomy day. Share your photos, Summit. Click on "Upload Photos and Videos" and yours today.
