Lincoln-Hubbard students kicked off their Civil War unit with a special project involving Civil War artifacts.
Carmela Valles' fifth grade students at Lincoln-Hubbard School in Summit began a month-long project recently to kick off their Civil War unit. Working alongside Rutgers Professor Carol Gorman, Instructional Facilitator Michelle Hawley and Lincoln-Hubbard Media Specialist Carole Stubeck the students perused Civil War artifacts on loan from the Morris Museum. The artifacts were meant to spark the students' wonderings and help them pose questions about the Civil War, as they entered the area of study. This method of teaching called guided inquiry engages students in the learning process by activating prior knowledge, making connections and prepping for new knowledge. The students of 5V will work on the Civil War unit for next next several …

The aging school presents safety and sanitary issues for Summit children.
Issues with the aging facility were first raised with the district more than a decade ago. The restrooms in Jefferson Elementary School were inadequate, Summit school officials said, especially for the younger female students who would have to climb a couple of sets of stairs just to reach them. The sloping asphalt drive leading from the back of the school was too steep and presented a safety risk. And the electrical transformer, situated right on the grassy hill where children play, always seemed like an unnecessary risk. But it likely wasn’t until construction completed on school’s independent addition in 2008, the Jefferson Primary Center, that the issues plaguing the aging elementary school became pronounced. Touted as a state-of-the-…

Local Rotarian donated book to all third-graders in the district.
For the seventh year, Rotarian Gregory Drummond generously donated dictionaries to all the third graders in the Summit Public Schools. The Dictionary Project, which started in 1992, hoped that local sponsors — such as Rotary Clubs — would provide dictionaries to every third grader in the United States. According to their website (www.dictionaryproject.org) their goal is to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary. Rotary President John Leatherbee and Rotarian Greg Drummond traveled from school to school making deliveries. Here, they are at the Franklin Library with third grade students. This information was provided by the …

Second-graders completed the project as part of their Citizen of the Month program.
As part of their Citizen of the Month program, second graders in Mr. Gannon's class at Brayton paired up with Mrs. Cassidy's fifth grade class to work together on a project focusing on autism awareness. The students worked in mixed-grade groups to create a video highlighting facts as well as how students can be good friends to individuals who are autistic. The students gathered on Monday, in the cafeteria, to share the finished project with Principal Dr. Cheryl Moretz and speak about the process. The second graders were appreciative that the fifth graders helped them complete the tasks and the older students enjoyed getting to spend time with younger ones and in some cases, even their siblings. The video is posted on the Elementary …
