In 2004, the Middle School was named after Summit Middle School's office manager, Mr. Lawton C. Johnson, who is the first employee in the history of the Summit school system to attain 50 years of service.

The symphony is still sponsored by the recreation department, now the Department of Community Programs, and has 65 active members, including high school students, that perform three concerts each season. Concerts are either held at Summit High School or Summit Middle School, as are rehearsals, which are every Wednesday at 7:30pm New musicians are always welcome to join.
