Girls Basketball Falls to Shabazz in NJSIAA Sectional Finals

The Hilltoppers give a great effort, but fall to No. 1 seed Malcolm X. Shabazz, 64-37.

NEWARK–The Summit girls basketball team could have dreaded Monday's NJSIAA sectional final against the nationally-ranked Shabazz Bulldogs, but they didn't. Instead, Summit played with confidence, determination, and a self-belief that was inspiring to both the coaching staff and the fans. "All morning, and even yesterday in practice, we felt like we were going to win this game," Summit head coach Brian Erickson said. The Hilltoppers played a tremendous first half and trailed by only four points, 30-26, at halftime. An exceptional 24-2 Bulldog run in the third quarter, however, ultimately put the game out of Summit's reach, and Shabazz won by a final score of 64-37. "We played so well in the first half. I really couldn't have asked them for …

Mark Jones Makes Summit High History

Jones won the Meet of Champions in Toms River in February.

For the first time in Summit High School history the school has a Meet of Champions winner in the high-jump event in junior Mark Jones. He jumped 6 feet, 8 inches for his first place finish in Toms River at the end of February. Standing 6 feet, 6 and ¾ of an inch tall, and with parents who were both high-jumpers at Cornell, Jones seems to have been destined for high-jumping greatness. His father, Bob Jones, was the first high jumper to hit the 7 foot mark in New Jersey as a student at East Brunswick High School in 1977. Mark Jones' personal best is currently 6 feet 10 inches, but his goal is to match his father by jumping 7 feet. "Right now, I'm just focusing on 7 feet," Jones said. "That's kind of a mile-mark for high school jumping. From…

The win also represented Summit head coach Brian Erickson's 100th win as the team's coach, and the final time that seniors Michelle Burian, Emily Cristaldi, and Cassie Hall would play in their home gymnasium. "I'm sad that this was my final game here, but I'm more excited that we get to move on to the finals," Cristaldi said. "We couldn't have done it without the crowd's support," Hall said, describing the gym's standing-room-only crowd. "This was the first game where we've had a crowd like that. Things could have…

"What a tremendous team effort tonight," Summit head coach Brian Erickson said. "I haven't seen us play like this in a while. I knew we had it in us." In a majority of their games this season, the Hilltoppers came out strong and obtained a commanding lead that opponents could not overcome. On Thursday night, however, the Hilltoppers struggled to find their rhythm early. Field goals by Kate Martino and Amanda Murphy represented Summit's only first quarter points. After eight minutes of play, the Hilltoppers trailed 9-4. "We played too…

Girls Ice Hockey Has A Bright Future

Freshmen Stuart Humphrey and Kirste Garguilo are already planning to be back next year, improving on this season.

Summit girls hockey head coach Matt Stanbro has a long term plan for the future of the program. "Realistically, I use the other teams as measuring sticks of who we should be able to compete with this year, next year and three years down the road," Stanbro said. "I try to think in a four year cycle with the players and who we have.  For instance this year we're able to compete with Pingry. At times we are able to play very competitive games against Princeton Day School and Princeton High School.  Those are teams I want to stay very close to next year and hopefully even get a few wins." "Just trying to move up, look at who's the next best team, and who's after that," Stanbro said.  "That's what we've been doing and that's what we'll continue…

Boys Hockey Rolls Past West Morris in State Tournament

Hilltoppers come out on top 7-3.

Two championships down, one to go. The Summit ice hockey team has already held aloft the Union County Conference regular season trophy and the Union County Cup, and now this talented squad is going for the trifecta. With their "one game at a time" mantra, the Hilltoppers got off to a great start in state action, defeating visiting West Morris-Central 7-3 at Warinanco Ice Center in the first round of the Public B tournament. "Their first line was quick," said Summit head coach Keith Nixon. "They moved the puck well. We were a little concerned off of that. But once we saw their other two lines, we said, look, we have to neutralize this first line and take advantage of their second and third, and the first two goals we got was our second line…

Girls Basketball Squeezes by Delran in First Round of States

Hilltoppers play aggressive defense to get 43-38 victory.

SUMMIT–With its single elimination format, everything is at stake in the NJSIAA state basketball tournament. This was evident as the No. 3 seed Summit Hilltoppers hosted the No. 14 Delran Bears in a battle from start to finish on Tuesday night. Though Summit entered the game with a better record (20-3), it was clear that Delran (13-9) had scouted their opponent and entered the game prepared. The Hilltoppers got off to a great start with a 6-0 run in the opening quarter courtesy of a long Emily Cristaldi jumper, a Kate Martino floater in the lane, and two Cassie Hall free throws. Delran, however, countered with a 7-0 run of their own with strong post play from forwards Crystal Cleveland and Haley Cullen. Following the run, Summit switched …
