Coming off a championship season, four Summit High School football players are heading to separate Division 1 schools this fall.

Four of Summit's senior football players signed national letters of intent to play college football on Wednesday morning at Summit High School. After winning the state championship in December, it's been a year of highs for these student athletes. Place-kicker Mike Badgley will attend University of Miami. Linebacker Nick Liberato will attend Sacred Heart University in Fairfiled, CT. Running back/linebacker AJ Iarussi will attend UPenn where he has also been accepted to the Wharton School of Business. The Summit High School junior had a strong showing in the 195lb weight class in Atlantic City.
AJ Iarussi fell to Carson Stack of Haddonfield in a 9-0 decision yesterday. Yet, he defeated Matt Schofield of Barnegat, 3-2 in triple overtime to continue wrestling in Saturday's wrestleback's in the NJSIAA state tournament. Iarussi, who has wrestled since the eighth grade, lost the Region championship in a difficult 3-1 triple overtime match against Anthony Tancs of Brearly. He placed second in the region after a district championship win a week earlier. "I'm getting a lot of experience," said the upbeat Iarussi. "I'm only a junior," he said. Summit High School junior will face his next opponent in the semifinals on Saturday at Union High School.
Summit's 195 lb district champion A.J. Iarussi, a top seed in the Region 3 tournament is heading into the semifinals on Saturday at Union High School. He won his first match of the region competition on Friday night against Nick Haboj of Madison. The Summit High School junior was defeated in the quarterfinals of last year's tournament. Region 3 action begins at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at Union High School.

The 126 lb. wrestler wins 3-0 final bout against Rahway. AJ Iarussi is county runner-up at 195 lb.
Nick Abbott became the Union County wrestling champion in the 126 lbs. weight class on Sunday. A.J. Iarussi nabbed a second place finish at 195lbs. As the Summit High School wrestling program attempts to return to its glory days of the 80s and 90s, the two juniors are clearly guys to look up to. "I'm really excited," said Abbott moments after accepting his gold medal for first place. He said he hopes his win inspires other kids to try wrestling. "I think it's coming up," he said about Summit Public School's program in the elementary and middle schools. Abbott won a hard fought county final match against Isaac Valentin of Rahway High School.
