The annual spring “Girls’ Night Out” sponsored by Summit Downtown, Inc. returns on Thursday, from 5 to 9 p.m. and promises to be a special evening for "girls" of all ages. Check in at the Welcome Center located on Beechwood Road and Bank Street and meet special guest, nationally syndicated columnist and author, Tracy Beckerman in the author’s lounge. David Bane and his wife Jennifer love all things hospitality and when it comes to food, they also love steak tips, so when a vacant storefront became available the couple was in search of a business to fill it. As Dave sat online ordering The Meat House steak tips, it hit the couple to franchise The Meat House, a revitalization of the local butcher shop. However, The Meat House is more than just a local butcher shop, Jennifer explained, it also features seafood, specialty items, prepared foods, cheeses, desserts and even beer and wine. “It’s the Williams-Sonoma of butchers meets specialty shop,” Jennifer calls it. Santa will arrive on Summit YMCA rooftop at 3 p.m. Children can visit with Santa before the Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony on the Village Green at 4:45 p.m.
The official start to the holiday season in Summit is set to begin this Sunday with Santa’s Arrival and the Annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony. As a long-standing tradition in Summit, Santa will arrive on the rooftop of the Summit YMCA on Dec. 2 at 3 p.m. The tree lighting ceremony, which is in its third year, will take place on the Village Green, located at Broad Street and Maple Street, at 4:45 p.m. These festivities are organized by Summit Downtown Inc. and sponsored by Hilltop Community Bank, which made a donation to support activities and donated goods for the event. “Although Summit Downtown Inc. manages the downtown Special Improvement District, this is the kick off for the holidays and an event for the whole community to come …

A reader suggests more lighting is needed at site of recent fatal accident.
Responding to a fatal pedestrian accident in Downtown Summit on Wednesday night Summit Patch readers have been commenting that streets near Summit train station are potentially unsafe. One reader offered a suggestion for how to lessen the dangers on Maple Street and Union Place, where the fatal accident occurred. “This particular crosswalk is very, very dark, says BJ Coghan, “I am always concerned when crossing there on the way home from the bus, particularly in a dark coat. As usual, little or no progress has been made since the December tragedy. First, no tickets for 'jay walking' have been issued in the past eight weeks. Next year Scotti's Record Shop will begin its last stand at 351 Springfield Ave. This week, the music chain announced it was closing its only other existing Scotti's Music Shops store in Morristown. "It's a testament to them serving their community well to have stayed in biz all these years," said Joel Oberstein, president of Almighty Music Marketing in California. At its peak, according to store owner Gary Scotti, the Scotti's chain had stores in Madison, Gillette and Chester. There were ice sculptures, free coffee and cocoa by the Summit P.A.L at the Village Green on Broad Street and Maple Avenue. Summit Downtown sponsored the event for local parents and children.
