The Weekender: Jersey Fresh Union County’s Farmers Markets

You will find more than just produce at your local farmers market. Fresh baked goods, jams, honey and much more are available for purchase from local merchants.

The Pine Barrens in South Jersey are the first known home to the cultivated high bush blueberry and remains the second-largest producer of blueberries nationwide.  Each year, 52 million pounds are harvested from Atlantic and Burlington Counties.  Where do all these blueberries go?  A large percentage of them are available at your local farmers market along with other delicious fruits and vegetables. Other items available are fresh herbs, baked good, artisan breads, cheeses, fish and seafood, flowers and specialty items from New Jersey purveyors. Farmers Market Week Underway

The Summit Farmers Market, relocated to Beachwood Road and Bank Street features Jersey fresh fruits and vegetables.

New Jersey officials, including Gov. Chris Christie, are encouraging residents to take part in Farmers Market Week, beginning this weel and continuing through August 11. The Summit Farmers Market, which runs every Sunday from 8 a.m to 1:30p.m. through Nov. 18, features a variety of Jersey fruits and vegetables, as well as fresh fish from the New Jersey shore, handmade food products, and baked goods. “You can’t get more local than visiting a New Jersey farmers market, where you can find a vast variety of just-picked fruits, vegetables and herbs and many other agricultural products from our state’s farmers,” said New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture Douglas H. The Weekender: Pirates, Bears and Ducks, Oh My!

A variety of events await you this weekend. There's outdoor fun and discussions about adventures from ship to shore.

This weekend is filled with exciting and wonderful things for families to do. The Children’s Theater in Westfield is presenting, “How I Became a Pirate.” To remain on the open seas, New Providence Memorial Library is hosting a presentation, “Titanic Survivors and Their Stories.” The “bear” necessities brings us to Berkeley Heights Public Library with a lecture on “How to Become a Bear-Smart Community." Summit Celebrates the Holidays

Summit has an assortment of activities and events this month in preparation for the holidays.

Summit's holiday season will officially start with Santa's arrival at the Square Yard on December 6 at 3:00 p.m. First he will land on the roof of a nearby building and be greeted by Mrs. Claus, according to Tony Melchionna, Chairman of Summit Downtown Inc.  Santa and Mrs. Claus will hand out toys and candy, and then children will line up to have the chance to sit on Santa's lap.  Summit Downtown Inc.will take free pictures, and the event goes on until all children are taken care of, said Marin Mixon, administrator of Summit Downtown Inc.
