1.     Father’s Day was first celebrated in America in Spokane, WA, on June 19, 1910, making today the 102nd anniversary of the holiday. Father's Day: What is the Best Advice Dad Ever Gave You?

Patch wants to hear your most memorable words of advice from your dad. Is "life isn't fair" one of those pieces of advice?

"Any man can be a father. It takes someone special to be a dad," wrote an unknown author. When I was young my father, who was a police sergeant, used to give one favorite piece of advice. He would ask the officers on his squad to have one simple goal for the day. "Every day make one thing better than when you found it," he would tell them. When I graduated from the police academy, my dad pinned my badge on my chest and whispered to me to the stage, "Every day make one thing better than when you found it." That piece of advice is something I still think about all of the time. My husband often tells our kids that "life is not fair," which is also a good thing to learn in life. He does not tell the kids to pull his finger (for that I am so …

Beyond 'The Tie' — Dad's Day Gift Ideas

Need some fresh ideas for gifting the man who has everything? Read on!

When I was a kid, we had a pretty limited list of items on our Father's Day menu of gifts. Dad could look forward each year to a new bottle of Old Spice or Aqua Velva, a pack of white short-sleeved Hanes Beefy T's, a box of handkerchiefs, or — wait for it — a new tie. And they both have so many neckties that they could easily string them together to form a span across the Grand Canyon — twice. It's time to think outside the (tie) box. Here's a few local and semi-local ideas  — plus a handful of dad gifts from the internet: Instead of …
