It began in Spokane, WA, 102 years ago today.
1. Father’s Day was first celebrated in America in Spokane, WA, on June 19, 1910, making today the 102nd anniversary of the holiday. Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by single father William Jackson Smart in Spokane, invented the modern holiday. 2. President Lyndon B. Johnson made it a holiday to be celebrated on the third Thursday of June in 1966, but it wasn’t officially recognized until 1972, when Richard Nixon was in office. 3. Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in 61 countries, by far the day the holiday is celebrated in the most countries. Those countries include Afghanistan, Pakistan, Canada, China, Cuba, Japan, Mexico, India and the United Kingdom, among many others. 4. According to …
Patch wants to hear your most memorable words of advice from your dad. Is "life isn't fair" one of those pieces of advice?
"Any man can be a father. It takes someone special to be a dad," wrote an unknown author. When I was young my father, who was a police sergeant, used to give one favorite piece of advice. He would ask the officers on his squad to have one simple goal for the day. "Every day make one thing better than when you found it," he would tell them. When I graduated from the police academy, my dad pinned my badge on my chest and whispered to me to the stage, "Every day make one thing better than when you found it." Need some fresh ideas for gifting the man who has everything? Read on!
When I was a kid, we had a pretty limited list of items on our Father's Day menu of gifts. Dad could look forward each year to a new bottle of Old Spice or Aqua Velva, a pack of white short-sleeved Hanes Beefy T's, a box of handkerchiefs, or — wait for it — a new tie. Fast forward a generation, and my husband and dad have both exhausted a updated list of tried-and-true manly gifts: trail mix, boutique beers, grilling accoutrements, pro-baseball/hockey/basketball tickets. And they both have so many neckties that they could easily string them together to form a span across the Grand Canyon — twice. It's time to think outside the (tie) box. Here's a few local and semi-local ideas — plus a handful of dad gifts from the internet: Instead of …
