The Hoyas article goes on to point out where the team ranks nationwide:  Georgetown was one of 65 teams to earn the 2011 NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award. Teams must earn a GPA of 3.0 or better in the first semester of the 2011-12 academic year to be recognized. The Georgetown field hockey team maintained a 3.44 GPA, ranking just …

Kent Place Knocked Out of UCT

Dragons (12-4-1) lose a close one to Johnson in the semi-final round on Saturday night.

KENT PLACE FIELD HOCKEY ENJOYING FINE SEASON  Kent Place has definitely closed the gap between itself and the upper echelon of teams in Union County of late. Unfortunately, it fell just a little bit short of joining the elite on Saturday night as Kent Place played valiantly but suffered a 2-0 loss to Johnson in the semifinal round of the Union County Tournament in Clark.  Kent Place was seeking its first trip to the UCT final since it last won the tournament in 2003. “I think we played very well against Johnson,” said third-year coach Sara Wheeler. “We kept the game scoreless until late in the first half.”  Johnson, which scored within the final four minutes of the first half, added another goal midway through the second half and goalie …

Summit Crushes Number 20 Ranked Montclair

Summit Field Hockey won 2-0

The Hilltoppers beat Montclair on Tuesday at Montclair at 4pm with a score of 2-0. Montclair is ranked number 20 in the Star Ledger top 20 teams. Summit stepped off the bus ready to win. The Hilltoppers had a quick warm up and were ready for a tough game. As the whistle blew the ball began constantly switching fields and changing possession. Both sides held strong for the first half. Summit had several close shots and multiple penalty corners but no goals. Their defense was also on top of things as they offered goalkeeper Grace Berkery unneeded assistance. There was hardly thirty seconds left in the first half when a foul was committed in the Montclair circle. A penalty corner was called and Summit prepared for a possible goal. Sophomore …

Summit is Knocked Out of Field Hockey UCT

Summit falls to Kent Place 4-0

The first round of the Union County Tournament took place on Saturday. Summit varsity field hockey faced Kent Place at Kent Place School at 4 pm. The game began with both sides avidly struggling for control of the ball. The Hilltoper's defense held strong. They intercepted Kent Place passes and gained possession of the ball. Rarely did the dragons seem to be dominating the field. Summit senior goal keeper, Grace Berkery, did an impeccable job making a multitude of saves. Summit's offense was respectable as well. The girls had several penalty corners and many close shots on the cage but unfortunately were unable to score. Their heads were up as they communicated like a team, connecting passes and taking hits. The first half ended with a tie…

Field Hockey Falls to Voorhees in State Tourney

Summit dropsl 4-2.

Voorhees High School ended the Summit High School field hockey team's run in the State tournament on Tuesday. The Hilltoppers fell 4-2 at Voorhees High School in the quarterfinals of the State Tournament. The starting whistle blew and both teams were out for the ball, eager to claim the win. Voorhees quickly dribbled to the Summit circle as the Hilltoppers were getting adjusted to the grass field.  Summit generally plays on turf where the hits are cleaner and more accurate, and the game as a whole moves much faster. More than 20 minutes into the half, the score was still tied at zero and the ball remained under the control of Voorhees. Voorhees dominated in the Summit circle and got a string of seven penalty corners in a row. By the end of…

The Summit High School varsity girl's field hockey team continued its preseason schedule on Tuesday, falling 3-0 to Pingry at Summit High School. "I don't care about wins and losses in the preseason," Summit head coach Jen Schwarzenbek said. "We are still trying to work out the kinks to get players in the right position." This was the second of three tune-up match days for the Hilltoppers, who hosted a Fall Classic scrimmage tournament this past Saturday. The Fall Classic included Bridgewater, Chatham, Newton, Northern Highland, South Plainfield, Voorhees, and Wall. Pingry scored one goal in the first, second, and fourth quarters. It capped off an impressive run for the Hilltoppers (18-4), who began the tournament as the seventh seed. Summit goalie Kelsey Lees shut out each of its first three opponents (Cranford, Chatham and Voorhees), and defense once again proved to be the difference maker. “We had nothing to lose,” head coach Jen Schwarzenbek said. “(Bernards) is a powerhouse, but we knew that if we didn’t let down we could come in and win.” In the last five minutes alone, Summit stopped four penalty corners by Bernards to keep its one-goal lead. “The defense played phenomenal,” Schwarzenbek said. “We anticipated passes and …
