County residents have begun the long process of recovering from the destruction left behind by 'Frankenstorm.'

The county has offered the following advice for residents using shelters in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders has issued the following alerts and updates for residents seeking emergency shelter: “The Union County Medical Reserve Corps has been activated and is working with the Red Cross, Salvation Army and local officials to ensure that emergency shelter is available to all who need it,” said Freeholder Chairman Alexander Mirabella. “If you plan to use a shelter, please take steps to make your stay more comfortable for yourself and those sheltering with you.” To use a municipal evacuation shelter, use the non-emergency phone number for your local police department. Due to the approach of Hurricane Sandy, the County of Union has declared a State of Emergency from 6 p.m. tonight to 6 p.m. tomorrow night, county officials said in a press statement at about 4 p.m. Monday. All County buildings and offices will be closed and only essential personnel and emergency responders will be required to report to work. Also, a total of 13 municipalities have declared states of emergencies including the following municipalities: Roselle, Rahway, Clark, Winfield, Berkeley Heights, New Providence, Mountainside, Springfield, Cranford, Scotch Plains, Fanwood, Linden and Roselle Park. The following information was provided by the County of Union. The Union County Medical Reserve Corps has been activated to staff a regional shelter at the Cranford Community Center, 220 Walnut Ave. in Cranford. The shelter is accepting pets, however, owners must bring crates for animals, food, and litter and any waste disposal bags, etc. for their pets. If animals pose a threat they will have to be removed. Limited food and water are available for people. No medications will be available. The utility is saying that customers who lose power may be without it for a week or more.
PSE&G is reporting about 4,000 customers without power in the early stages of Hurricane Sandy. The majority – about 3,000 – are located in the utility’s southern counties of Mercer, Burlington, Camden and Gloucester. The utility provides electric service to 2.2 million customers. The utility is urging customers to prepare for the possibility of lengthy outages – perhaps seven days or more -- due to the enormity of Hurricane Sandy, which forecasters predict may become the worst storm to hit the Northeast in 100 years. It may take until Wednesday until a full assessment of the storm’s damage can be made and the utility can more accurately predict when full restoration can be made. The following information has been provided by the County of Union, regarding measures that have been taken to prepare for Hurricane Sandy. County Lakes Lowered: In anticipation of Hurricane Sandy, Union County has lowered the level of several lakes within its parks system. The following lakes have been lowered: Nomahegan Lake in Cranford; Clark Reservoir in Clark; Bloodgoods Pond in Clark; Jackson Pond in Clark and Milton Lake in Rahway. These measures have been taken in order to minimize flooding as the lakes fill up during the hurricane. Superior Court: Union County Superior Court and Vicinage will be closed Monday. Latest report from the National Weather Service shows projected rainfall totals double in some spots.
According to the Sunday afternoon report from National Weather Service Meteorologist Gary Szatkowski, the inland flooding threat posed by Hurricane Sandy has increased in the past 24 hours. "The takeaway message is that our region is currently in the path of a very dangerous storm," Szatkowski said. "Even if the eventual path changes, we will still feel severe effects from this storm." Utility company says its hiring extra contractors, urges residents to be prepared
Residents should be prepared for power outages of up to 10 days from the anticipated impact of Hurricane Sandy, according to a release from the parent company of JCP&L. FirstEnergy Corp, which owns the local utility company along with several others on the East Coast, said in a release that the oncoming storm could wreak havoc with the electrical system and residents should be prepared to be without power for more than a week.
