Parent Disagrees With Scouts Recruiting in Summit

A Franklin School mom shares her outrage over a mass email to parents asking for Cub Scout recruits.

A Franklin Elementary School parent contacted Patch to voice dissaproval about recruiting efforts for second grade Cub Scouts at the school. The parent, who didn't want her name used, but who is involved with her PTO and other organizations, shared her response to a recent letter to Franklin parents from Cub Scouts organizers.     The parent wrote the response to Franklin School officials as well. According to the Cub Scouts' letter, a schoolwide annoucement was planned for today calling all interested students to the cafeteria for a Cub Scouts information session. The parent wrote a second email addressed to school officials explaining her concerns:     The Boy Scouts of American have recently come under fire after media reports that the …

I think that none of you actually read this article. It seems to me from closer reading of it what this mom is bothered by and what she spoke out against was using school time and property to recruit for the organization. If one organization is allowed to send flyers home in backpacks and make announcements over the PA then all should be. And by making these sorts of announcements and allowing …   more ›

Public Weighs In On School Overcrowding at BOE Meeting

One parent pledges $50k to help with space issues.

The Board of Education met last night for a regular meeting. Here’s what happened:   Proposals for Franklin School Space Issues: “Today, kids at some of the schools move to another classroom to do art, “ said board member Ed Mokuvos. “At Franklin [children] would get on a bus, that bus would go to one of the other schools where there would be a dedicated space for art or music.” Mokuvos stressed that it was only one of several options on the table for consideration to deal with a lack of space for arts classes at Franklin. The board continues to seek feedback from the community on options to handle the problem of overcrowding at Franklin via a survey on the school’s website (HERE). Franklin’s PTA president Jenny Hodges stood up during the …

BOE Looking to Renovate School Library's "Dangerous" Condition

At a recent meeting, the board approved a move to bring the elementary school library up to code.

The Summit Board of Education held a regular meeting on Thursday evening in the library of Franklin Elementary School to talk about: Balancing Enrollment at Franklin: The Board of Education approved an $8,500 study by Haber Associates to “balance enrollment in elementary schools”. One of the pieces of data among several that are being looked at includes sending students to other elementary schools to balance out the overcrowding, but the board emphasized that it was not seeking this as a solution, but brainstorming many options. “Our space issues at Franklin have to do with the fact the building wasn’t made for so many students,” said Franklin’s principal, Dr. Sheila Cole. Cole said that when she arrived at the school over 10 years ago …

Why are we wasting $8,500 for consultants. There are two simple solutions. 1) Redistrict 2) Increase class size Neither will be popular given the "Summit Mindset" but it's time to face up to reality for once. Are the consultants being hired, so that when the inevitable conclusions 1) and 2) are reached, the BOE can point to the consultants and blame them? The "but the board emphasized that it was…   more ›
