A look at the biggest police and fire stories in Summit for the year 2012. This is the first part of a two part story.
January 2, 2012 – 2 Minors Injured in School Bus Accident Two minors were injured after a school bus overturned on Route 24. The bus overturned on the bridge over River Road. According to Summit Fire Department Battalion Chief Rick Locke three people were injured, two of them minors. He added that the school bus appeared to have hit a guardrail and spun around at least once where it came to stop in the center lane of Route 24. January 13, 2012 – State Police Helicopter Lands Unexpectedly in Summit A state police helicopter made an unexpected landing in the Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit on the afternoon of Jan. 13. Union County HAZMAT unit and officials with the state Department of Environmental Protection were on scene. The accident involved an overturned pesticide truck and three people were injured in the accident.
(Update: 5:10p.m.) Neighbors looked on and about a dozen children frolicked in a pool at a birthday party just a few feet away as several local agencies worked to cleam up a chemical spill caused by a crash on South Street. Three people were rushed to the hospital following the crash, which occured around 2:30p.m. An overturned chemical truck blocked the street at the intersection of Broad Street and South Street in Summit for several hours. A Union County HAZMAT team was on scene, as well as officials from the NJDEP who monitored the cleanup. As of 5:15p.m. crews were awating a contractor to clean up the chemical spill, which was believed to be pesticide and fertilizer. South Street is currently closed to automobile traffic. The corner …

Traffic delays expected throughout the morning rush going east on I-78.
State police reported a major morning rush hour delays along I-78 today due to an overturned tanker truck. All eastbound lanes approaching Exit 50 near Vaux Hall Road in Union were closed. Hazmat units responded to the accident, as well as the Summit and Millburn fire departments. Morning traffic was diverted to I-78 express lanes according to a state police bulletin that advised commuters to avoid I-78 eastbound altogether. Traffic delays near exit 45 near Glenside Ave. in Springfield were also reported. Around 6:30 a.m., a radio call went out for Springfield emergency crews about an overturned truck on 78. Bobby, thanks for pointing that out. There was a team from Union County and they were responsible for cleaning up the mess. The responsibility was split between Summit FD, a county HAZMAT unit and a pair of workers with the Department of Environmental Protection. I will make a fix in the story.
