John Liberato, who has been at helm of Summit Football since 2007 and lead team to state playoffs every year since 2008, said "it's the right time" to leave his position.
John Liberato is stepping down as head coach of Summit Football on a high note. After leading the Hilltoppers to a 30-0 state sectional title over Palisades Park in early December of 2012, the second in his six years as head coach, Liberato told Patch Wednesday that “it’s the right time” to leave his position. “I just felt it was time to make that decision,” Liberato said. “I have the support of my family. The people here in Summit are tremendous; this has to be the best place to live in the world. Summit scored on its first possession when Tyler Carbone hit Mike Badgley who went 73 yards for the score and the extra point. At the start of the 2nd quarter a Summit drive stalled and Badgley kicked a 30 yard field goal to give Summit a 10-0 lead. For the rest of the half Johnson started to came alive and their running game began to dominate the game. While Summit’s passing and rushing game was sputtering. However, the half ended with Summit ahead 10-0.Beginning the 3rd quarter Johnson intercepted a Carbone pass at the Summit 42 and scored 6 plays later. Summit coach Kevin Kostibos will work as an assistant offensive line coach. Ten Union County football players were selected to participate in the 2012 New Jersey North-South All-Star game.
Anthony Byers, Dave Barletta, Anthony Manganiello and Michael Kilmek were all selected to compete in the 34th annual North-South All-Star Football Classic today at Kean University. All of the directors, general managers, coaches and athletes were introduced to the press on Sunday at Piscataway High School. In addition to the game, all players participate in a four-day camp, which serves to help the athletes prepare for the game, and prepare for the responsibilities and rigorous schedule that comes along with being a collegiate athlete. The game will carry a bit of extra significance for Barletta, as he will get one last opportunity to play for legendary New Providence Football Coach Frank Bottone, who retired after winning the 2010 …

Hilltoppers' football finishes 11-1 after loss in title game.
UNION -- When it comes to state tournament football there’s no shame in losing to good teams that have great players. The Hilltoppers had a terrific season but they had not come against a team as good as Madison and a player as talented as Justin Goodwin in some time. Madison’s junior tailback put on a show, rushing for 164 yards and two touchdowns and passing for another score to lift Madison to a 47-7 victory over Summit to capture the North 2, Group II state title on Friday night on the turf at Kean University. Summit completed its season at 11-1. A four-yard sweep by Kyr’e Negron with 6:26 left in the second quarter was the Hilltoppers only score. We caught up with some former Hilltoppers' who took some time to reflect on their own experiences as well as offer some advice for the team as they prepare for their North 2 Group 2 championship showdown against Madison.
We got a chance to catch up with some key players from past Summit championship teams. The former players vividly recalled details some of the most memorable moments of their Hilltopper careers' and offered some words of advice for this year's team as they preapre for the title game. Carl DeMuth '95 (two-time state champion: '93 and '94) I was fortunate enough to play in three state championships and won two; my junior and senior years in 1993 and 1994. We played Mendham both years. The 1993 game was one of the best games in Summit High School history. We were down 21-19 and scored with 20 seconds left to win 26-21.
