Summit First Aid Squad Helps With Successful Turkey Drive

Other Fellow First Foundation's food drive boosts collection for Community Food Bank of New Jersey.

One would think on their day off that the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad might curl up in front of a fire on Sunday afternoon and watch the Giants or the Jets game.   Not in Summit.   This past Sunday, an army of Rescue Squad volunteers, of all ages showed up to help the Other Fellow First Foundation conduct its 5th annual turkey drive on the Sunday before Thanksgiving in front of the Summit Diner.  Kathleen DiChiara, President of the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, who received the fruits of the successful drive, said, "most of the other turkey drives throughout the state were experiencing lower results when measured against last year.   However, Summit was a notable exception.  In three hours, Summit's results this year were 13 …

Summit Diner's 5th Annual Turkey Drive (Video)

Over 250 frozen turkeys were collected for Thanksgiving charity last year.

On Sunday, Nov. 18, Summit will once again show how much it can give to those in need of Thanksgiving food and supplies.  Come to the Summit Diner at 1p.m. near the corner of Summit Avenue and Union Place and drop off your frozen turkey and groceries. Last year dozens came out to support the turkey drive, including former Summit Mayor Jordan Glatt who helped deliver frozen turkeys. Portions of this article originally appeared on Nov. 21, 2011.

Summit Diner Once Again the Place to Donate to NJ Food Bank

Nov. 18, drop off frozen turkeys, bags of groceries and cash for the Community Food Bank of NJ.

Summit has much to be thankful for this year.  While Summit was operating without power, heat, trains and gas we made it through Sandy.  Many New Jersey towns, especially along the shore were not so lucky. For many years, Summit’s little Other Fellows First Foundation (www.summitdiner.org) has asked the city of Summit to help New Jersey families in distress around Thanksgiving. Each year, the little city on the hill has turned out in force to share its generosity with the less fortunate.   This year’s post Sandy crisis environment gives new meaning to the word Thanksgiving.  Once again, the foundation will be hosting its annual frozen turkey drive on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, November 18th, in front of the Summit Diner from 1- 4:00PM…

Letters to the Editor

Letter to the Editor: Thanks, From The Other Fellow First Foundation

Heeding Walter Long's call to support the organization led to a good year.

In the good ol’ days, things were better, larger, different. How often do we hear the good ol’ days remembered as though they were always much better than today? 2011 was an interesting year for Summit.  We had some good times and some disappointments.  However, no matter how bad things were for others, by surviving another year, we made it. Before 2011 is boxed up and archived, we would like to take a moment and single out four important lessons our little foundation learned this year:     Last year, one of our own, brought these lessons to life by saying goodbye. Walter D. Long, Summit’s former Mayor, and our friend, did our little foundation an enormous favor by asking folks who wanted to pay their respects to his memory, to do so by …

Who has your back?

They say that there are only three constants in life: Change, choice and priorities.

When unexpected change shows up quickly and regularly, as it did this year, with the arrival of both Irene and the late October storm, life gets complicated.  When the economy has you stressed to begin with, unexpected change is rarely benevolent.  Violent community change requires a shock absorber.   Our ever vigilant community shock absorber is our local chapter of the Red Cross.  When times get tough, the Red Cross is there for all of us, regardless of who we are or where we live.  Recently, in responding to these two storms, Summit’s shock absorber has taken a couple of big financial hits and could use some help. We all are all besieged with requests for help at this time of the year.  This creates an uncomfortable condition requiring…

Mayor Glatt Looks for Major Support at 2011 Turkey Drive

Summit has been a leader in Thanksgiving donations which the mayor hopes to build on this Sunday.

In his last Thanksgiving in office, Mayor Jordan Glatt is putting out the call to come and support the Other Fellow First Foundation's turkey drive this Sunday. “Summit is different from other N.J. zip codes, because Summit residents show up when it comes to helping other less fortunate neighbors,” the mayor said in a statement. Since 2008, according to a press release, Summit has shown itself to be a major contributor to the local Other Fellow First Foundation, based at the Summit Diner. In spite of the economic collapse that year, Summit surpassed some other N.J. towns with the amount of turkey, grocery and money donations received. This year, given the challenges the community faces in the wake of an early winter storm, organizers are …
