If your child, age 5 and older, needs help when it comes to reading, or just a little support, encouragement, and practice time during summer downtime, then you are welcome to sign them up for the summer Reading Camp offered by Summit Community Programs and assisted by TryCAN. Music class with Jammin Jenn is being offered this summer as well. The reading camp designed to entice struggling or reluctant students to enjoy the joys of reading. Children will use games (puzzles, magnets, shapes), books, music and other activities to improve reading skills. Children participate in enjoyable exercises to capitalize on strengths, instill self-confidence and foster a Can-do! attitude. We want to show students how to love learning and reading …

World Book Night’s National Chairperson is the Pulitzer Prize winning Anna Quindlen. Her mission is to encourage reading and enjoyment of the written word in print. Celebrated simultaneously in the U.S.A, Great Britain and Ireland, World Book Night hopes to spread the joy and love of reading by giving out free paperback books. Locally, Melissa Kuzma, Deputy Executive Director of the Summit Housing Authority, helped celebrate World Book Night on Monday, April 23 at the Vito Gallo Senior Center on Chestnut Avenue. She was chosen to be one of 25,000 representatives in the United States to hand out free books to commemorate the annual event. World Book Night USA will be celebrated on April 23, 2012. Twenty-five thousand passionate volunteers throughout the country will be giving away 20 copies of one of 30 specially chosen books in their community to spread the joy and love of reading. Melissa Kuzma, Deputy Executive Director of the Summit Housing Authority will be participating in the event by giving out copies of the novel Bel Canto by Ann Patchett on Monday, April 23 from 4 – 6 pm at the Vito Gallo Building, located at 12 Chestnut Ave. This event is open to the public.
