The Hilltoppers were knocked out of the State Tournament Tuesday night after losing 47-41 to Colonia.
The Summit Boys' Basketball team season ended all too early Tuesday night, as Colonia defeated the Hilltoppers 47-41 Tuesday night in the first round of the North 2, Group 3 State Tournament. The 4th seeded Hilltoppers were missing senior point guard and leading scorer Ba'Shawn Mickens because of an ankle injury, according to The Star-Ledger. Mac Wiesner lead all scorers with 18 points. Summit's season ends with a record of 18-6, while the 13th seeded Colonia advances to 10-15. Down three starters, the Hilltoppers trailed the RedDevils through much of the Thursday night home game. Up next: Summit hosts Colonia this Tuesday in a State Tournament game.
The Hot Read: Summit hosted Hunterdon Central Thursday night, the Hilltoppers' last game before they enter the NJSIAA State Tournament this Tuesday. Coming off a 64-51 loss to Memorial on Feb. 19, the Hilltoppers fell to the RedDevils, 49-34. Head Coach Dave White said the team was missing three key starters in Ba'Shawn Mickens and Mac Weisner, who were both sick, and Ryan Sweeney, who was out with an eye injury. The Hilltoppers trailed the RedDevils throughout much of the first half. Hunterdon Central was quick to rebound on Summit's failed attempts, leading 11-8 in the first quarter and 23-17 at halftime. Dave White has been coaching high school basketball for 11 years. White, a former basketball player, first coached his daughter's traveling basketball team for a few years. Then, he served as head coach of Pingry's girls' basketball team for nine years. Last year, White became the assistant varsity coach for the Millburn Boys' Basketball team. Late in fourth quarter against Johnson Thursday night, #3 senior point guard surpassed the 1,224-record set by WVU star Wellington Smith, according to The Star-Ledger.
Ba'Shawn Mickens is on fire. After scoring his 1,000th career point in a game against Hillside in mid-January, the senior point-guard became Summit's all-time leading scorer for the Summit Boys' Varsity Basketball team on Thursday night, surpassing the 1,224-record that was set by West Virginia University star and Summit native Wellington Smith in 2005. According to The Star-Ledger, #3 Mickens scored 20 points during the Hilltoppers' victorious 53-32 performance over A.L. Hilltoppers winning streak comes to an end after a close game with Jonathan Dayton in Springfield Thursday night.
The Summit and Jonathan Dayton boys’ basketball teams collided in Springfield Thursday night and unfortunately, the Hilltoppers did not come out on top. After a heartbreaking 49-48 loss at the buzzer, Dayton advances to 8-0, while Summit is now 7-1. “We didn’t shoot very well tonight. We usually shoot better than that, make the most of our opportunities,” said Summit Head Coach David White. “We had foul trouble and that hurt us.” Despite the loss, #3 Ba’Shawn Mickens racked up 26 points, the most for the Hilltoppers, while #25 Ryan Sweeney scored 11 points. The undefeated Hilltoppers improve to 6-0 after 62-52 victory over the Bears Friday night. Players and coaches honored Smith, a legendary Summit basketball player, before tip off.
It was an exciting Friday night at 125 Kent Place Blvd., as the undefeated Summit Boys’ Basketball team honored Wellington Smith, a legendary Hilltopper, and went on to defeat David Brearley. The Hilltoppers outscored the Bears most of the game to pull out the 62-52 win. But head coach David White, while pleased with the victory, said the team could have performed even better than they did. “We played well enough to win. It wasn’t quite what I had hoped for. We had a lot of opportunities to score near the basket we didn’t finish,” said head coach David White. “But there’s no such thing as a bad win so we’re glad to take it. Summit’s very own Wellington Smith will be honored by the Summit Boys’ Basketball Program tonight just before the team’s 7 p.m. game versus David Brearley at Summit High School. A local legend most Hilltoppers know well, Smith led the team to their state Sectional Championships in 2004 and 2005, said Head Coach David White. After graduating in 2005 from Summit High School, Smith attended Blair Academy for a post-graduate year and led its basketball team to a Prep School Championship. The 6’7” forward received a full athletic scholarship to West Virginia University, where he played with the Mountaineers in the NIT Championship and three trips to the NCAA tournament, including the Final Four in his senior season, White said.
