Summit BOE Briefs: Students Among Best Test Scorers in District

SEA talks extended to Jan. 11, new full-day kindergarten committee to be formed and board approved new tuition rate for 2012‐2013 preschool program.

The Summit Board of Education convened for a regular meeting on Thursday, December 15, at Lawton C.Johnson Summit Middle School. Board President Michelle Stevenson presided. ADMINISTRATIVE REPORTS Ms. Stevenson reported that the board of education’s Negotiations Committee and the negotiating committee of the SEA met with a state-appointed mediator on December 13, but further discussions will be necessary. The two committees will again meet with the mediator on Jan. 11. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nathan Parker said that although the board of education has decided not to move forward with the full-day, tuition based kindergarten pilot program, a new committee is being formed to look at other alternatives for instituting an all-day …

In the Schools: Literacy Coach Alicia Luick

A veteran teacher, Luick's role is to help primary school students boost their skills in reading and writing.

As the Summit Public Schools literacy coach for pre-kindergarten through 5th grades, Alicia Luick’s role is to lend support to classroom teachers primarily in the areas of reading and writing. “I work with the teachers in developing curriculum, planning lessons and units, identifying student needs through assessments, and targeting instructions to meet those needs,” Luick said. “I also keep the teachers informed on the most recent research and pedagogy in the literacy field and assist them in translating this information for application in the classroom.” Luick joined the Summit staff in May 2010 to fill the newly developed position of literacy coach.
