Statement on municipal election results by Summit Democrats Campaign to Elect Forman Ludden, Hairston, Bloom and White.
In response to the municipal election results announced by City Clerk David Hughes on November 8, Eileen Forman Ludden, Democratic candidate for Mayor, said: “It’s been an enormous personal privilege to run for Mayor of Summit, as part of a ticket of excellent candidates. Despite our disappointment not to have won, I’m proud that we ran a spirited and fair campaign, which always results in better government, no matter what the outcome. I thank all of the voters who supported our ticket at the polls, especially those who voted across party lines. I’m very, very grateful for the unwavering support of family, friends, and our entire team of dedicated volunteers. Special thanks to my running mates Susan Hairston, Sandy Bloom and Dennis White…

Summit's voter turnout is around 36 percent.
At one point on Tuesday, it seemed like it could be anyone's mayoral race. At the senior center on Chestnut Avenue, an octogenarian who considers herself a Democrat said she voted for Ellen Dickson. A patron at the Summit Diner when pressed about the election said he didn't care who won, "as long as Michael Vernotico became mayor." Another voter, who said she met with Democratic candidates at a block party over the summer said she voted for Eileen Ludden because she felt like she "knew" her. Mayor Jordan Glatt made history as Summit's first Democratic mayor in a century and as he decided not to seek re-election, Dickson won the election that will return a Republican to office again. With three candidates seeking to take over his post, …

Choose Ellen, Greg, Ron and Pat
Summit voters are confronted with three choices for Mayor on Election Day; party nominees Ellen Dickson, Eileen Forman Ludden, and independent Michael Vernotico. The traits we need for mayoral leadership are honesty, experience, compatibility, humility and performance. How do our candidates compare? Eileen Ludden is untested, inexperienced and naïve if she thinks we can reconcile our differences with Union County by playing nicey-nice. She may be a future contender but is not ready to take on the Chief Executive role of a major City and is definitely not a polished successor to Janet Whitman, Walter Long and Jordan Glatt. Michael Vernotico, although a seasoned pro, has personality flaws that have stifled the effectiveness of Council. He …

We decided to write this letter together, as your Mayor and At Large Councilman, because we believe we were both elected by a similar coalition of Democrats, Republicans and Independents who believed that we would bring a spirit of public service and non partisanship to our local government. We realize that you entrusted us to do the best job possible for Summit without regard for party or personal agenda, and we have tried our hardest to do that – even when we have found ourselves on opposite sides of an issue. Respect for the offices to which we were elected, and, most importantly, respect for each and every citizen of Summit – regardless of where they may come from, reside, work or worship - has guided our often difficult …

Amy Knight: Dear Editor, As a Summit resident who is still without power after almost six days, I am already starting to worry about the next time we have a weather-related disaster. Of course, I realize that the intensity of this storm and its terrible effects could not have been predicted. I appreciate the efforts of the city of Summit, in particular the mayor, to handle the situation. But I also hope that, after the two recent unprecedented storms that have wrought havoc on Summit, the city will put its thinking cap on and try to figure out how it can make its response even better to future such events. Last night I discussed this question with Democratic candidates in the upcoming election in Summit on Tuesday, November 8: Eileen …

To the Editor: When I heard Susan Hairston was running for the At Large spot on our city council, I was thrilled. I've known Susan for almost two decades, on a personal level as neighbors, as Washington School moms, and as fellow parents cheering from the basketball sidelines while our daughters played for a team our two husbands coached. More importantly, I was also able to observe her work on the Board of Ed as my time on the SEF and Rec Boards overlapped her time there. She's smart, friendly, thoughtful, and willing to collaborate — all valuable traits for a Common Council person and traits that all four of the Democratic candidates have. While I haven't known the rest of the slate as long as I've known Susan, I can say with …

To the Editor: As a former three-term Summit Council President and Councilman, I know there are certain characteristics required to be a successful Councilmember. I believe Dr. Robert Rubino has the correct characteristics – he’s a successful physician and small business owner, he had proven local government experience and he has extensive ties to our city. He also has good judgment and the proper temperament to serve the city well. I think he will bring a fresh energy and will work well with the other Councilmembers. This is an important election to bring new perspectives and harmony to our city. While I certainly also support the ticket of Ellen Dickson, Gregory Drummond and Patrick Hurley, I have written this letter specifically …

Morgan Murray, Ph.d. Endorses Dennis White for 2nd Ward Councilman
Morgan Murray, Ph.D.: To Members of the Summit Community: It is with great pleasure that I whole heartedly endorse Dennis White to be our next representative on the Common Council for Ward 2. Dennis is a man of integrity and high moral principles. He is a clear and articulate speaker, and a person with pragmatic good sense. In other words, he is not blinded by an ideology or personal agenda. Instead, he is someone who is willing to listen, guided by respect and a compassionate desire to understand. I have been Dennis’ neighbor and friend for 17 years. I have witnessed his devotion to his family, and I have watched his engagement in the community with admiration. He possesses that powerful combination of easy-going likability, with the …

Our Town: Please complete the quote. In Peace: Goodwill. Yet, we still have the drumbeat of ridicule. A more forward thinking Churchill quote is: "To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often." It better serves the community that there be a demand for improvement versus a demand for perfection.   more ›
