Showcase puts artworks by students in grade 1 through 12 on display at Overlook's Medical Arts Center.
Josue Rojas couldn't wait to show his father the artwork that adorned a wall of the Medical Arts Center. Rojas' work, along with about 49 other works from Summit students. Created by first-graders to high school seniors, the collected artwork filled the hallways with vibrant colors and photographic details. "Art gives kids creativity and allows them to share who they are," said Maria Lupo an Overlook Medical Center art therapist. Lupo joined project coordinator and Overlook pediatrician John Vigorita and artist Mike Fenton to help pull off the event that runs through March. "This will become an annual thing," said Fenton who pointed out the public school administrators, faculty, students and parents who mingled and looked at various art …

Art exhibit for student artists in grades 1 through 12 takes place this Thursday.
The Medical Arts Center at Overlook Medical Center will hold a ceremony to open an exhibit of the Summit Public Schools Art Department. All grades beyond kindergarten will be represented in the exhibit. This is the first time Overlook has opened its doors to a school-wide art showcase, according to a hospital official. "The school was very interested in doing it," Overlook's spokesperson Janina Hecht said. A total of 50 student works will appear in the exhibit. Officials were looking for a unique place to showcase the works for art students in grades 1 through 12. "They were looking for traffic that was different from where the parents go on a daily basis," said Hecht. Pediatrician Dr. John Vigorita was instrumental in brining the exhibit …

The Summit Board of Education approved four new focus areas that will guide the district’s decision-making and resource allocations through the next three school years. Decided last month at its Jan. 19 meeting, the newly approved focus areas will replace the current focus areas that are in effect until the end of this school year. The new guidelines are the result of input provided by parents, staff, and community members at four “Planning for the Future” meetings held throughout November and December of last year and through an online survey conducted through the district’s website. “We feel confident that the new focus areas are representative of the concerns and goals of the community,” said Michelle Stevenson, board of education …

The Board of Education opens talks tonight on a one-year school uniform pilot project.
Updates: Added quote from Summit parent and Superintendent Nathan Parker. Tonight's Summit Board of Education meeting will open discussion on a sometimes contentious topic for school districts: a school uniforms policy. The board is asking for feedback to see if it should consider a one-year pilot program to require school uniforms and expects to hear from parents at tonight's Board of Education workshop meeting. "This idea is in the very early thinking stage,” said Cathy Fernandez, who handles communications for Summit Public Schools. The issue of a dress code or school uniform has been raised in school districts all over the country in the wake of stricter rules to address school bullying and class performance. The idea some parents …

Dear Editor, We are trying to save the old chemical fire truck in Summit, NJ. We are doing a penny drive at Washington School in Ms. Madden’s class. It is important because Chemical Engine No. 1 has seen a lot of Summit history. It is from 1927. We need to help because if nobody helps the fire truck it won’t be here anymore. The penny drive will be held from January 9th to January 20th. Please send all donations to Washington School attention 2M. In order to save the fire truck the town needs to raise $75,000. This would cover the costs of a garage at the Carter House plus money to finance to restore the fire truck so it can run again. Every penny counts!! Checks could be made out to “Summit Historical Society” attention “Friends of …

Great article. The Summit Visual Arts Faculty and student artists are very excited about our chance to share our artwork with the community. However, I do want to make a correction. The "Happy Monkey" tempera painting is not correctly attributed. It is the work of Abigail Wells, a first grader at Brayton School. -- Mary E.
