Former Summit Resident Is a Saving Grace for St. Pat's

Victoria Cadavid moved from Colombia to Summit in 1999 to create a safe life for her children, and found her calling teaching Spanish in Chatham.

Victoria Cadavid, a Spanish teacher at Chatham's St. Patrick School is described as an excellent Spanish teacher. "She truly imparts on each child a love of the language, fun learning activities and great Spanish art projects," Patch reader Antoinette Walsh wrote of Cadavid. Cadavid, a New Providence resident, was born in Colombia. She attended a boarding school in Pennsylvania for high school, married and started a family in Colombia, and moved to Summit with her husband and two children in 1999. The first year her family lived in New Jersey, Cadavid did not work at all. "I was miserable. I said, 'I really have to do something next year,'" she said. "Then one day a letter arrived from the school saying they were going to start teaching …

In the Schools: Special Needs Teaching Consultant, Jennifer North

She is a coach for teachers as they engage in their day-to-day professional development.

Jennifer North is beginning her sixth year at Summit High School and her second year as instructional facilitator. She originally joined the staff at SHS as a special education teacher in 2006 after four years as a middle school special education teacher. An overarching goal of her job has been to support teachers of students with an IEP, but her role is now expanding to include teachers of all students. An IEP – Individual Education Plan – is developed by the district’s Special Services Department to address the educational requirements of students with a variety of different needs. One of the ongoing projects she and the teachers are working on is a gathering and analysis of students’ reading data. This information is being used to …

In the Schools: Literacy Coach Alicia Luick

A veteran teacher, Luick's role is to help primary school students boost their skills in reading and writing.

As the Summit Public Schools literacy coach for pre-kindergarten through 5th grades, Alicia Luick’s role is to lend support to classroom teachers primarily in the areas of reading and writing. “I work with the teachers in developing curriculum, planning lessons and units, identifying student needs through assessments, and targeting instructions to meet those needs,” Luick said. “I also keep the teachers informed on the most recent research and pedagogy in the literacy field and assist them in translating this information for application in the classroom.” Luick joined the Summit staff in May 2010 to fill the newly developed position of literacy coach. Teacher's Anti-Gay Comments: Fireable Offense or Free Speech?

Union County teacher's words on Facebook is stoking nationwide controversy.

Tonight, the Union Township school board meets under the cloud of controversy caused by anti-gay comments a teacher made on her personal Facebook page. The issue has grabbed headlines across the nation and led to discussions of teachers' ethics and free speech. According to a report in the Star-Ledger, Union Township teacher Viki Knox, an ordained minister at a church in Clark used the phrase "perverted spirit"  "breeds like cancer" and the word "sin" to describe homosexuality. She was said to be railing against her school’s recognition of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender History Month. Union school officials have said they are investigating the matter, but there doesn’t appear to be a solid line of right or wrong in this case. Or is…
