From the Summit Democrats

Letter to the Editor: Choose Eileen Forman Ludden as Mayor

Mayor Jordan Glatt and Steve Murphy endorse the best choice for Summit.

We decided to write this letter together, as your Mayor and At Large Councilman, because we believe we were both elected by a similar coalition of Democrats, Republicans and Independents who believed that we would bring a spirit of public service and non partisanship to our local government.  We realize that you entrusted us to do the best job possible for Summit without regard for party or personal agenda, and we have tried our hardest to do that – even when we have found ourselves on opposite sides of an issue.  Respect for the offices to which we were elected, and, most importantly, respect for each and every citizen of Summit – regardless of where they may come from, reside, work or worship - has guided our often difficult …

Letter to the Editor: Summit Needs Dickson as Mayor

Dickson is an experienced Summit politician who can bring about change.

To: Editor Two-term Councilwoman Ellen Dickson deserves our votes for Mayor on Tuesday, November 8th. Change is welcome in the Mayor’s Office after eight years, and Ellen is the best equipped candidate to bring about positive change. Ellen, as Mayor, will appoint the members of the Board of Education and chair the Board of School Estimate. She is the only candidate to have served as President of an elementary school PTA, Lincoln-Hubbard and the Summit High School PTA, and she is as well, the only candidate to serve on the Board of School Estimate. As Mayor, Ellen will be the immediate Supervisor of the Chief of Police. She will draw upon her experience as the current Chair of Council’s Public Safety Committee. As Mayor, Ellen will be a …

I wouldn't wait for an apology from Mrs. Sank. It appears that she is just up to her old tricks as the Democratic "PR" person or should I say "BR" for "bad relations."   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Sandy Bloom for Ward I

Sandy Bloom believes in pragmatic, non-partisan solutions to local problems.

To the Editor, I write to publicly thank my long-time friend Sandy Bloom for running for Common Council, and to encourage residents of Ward 1 to vote for her. Summit needs Sandy. Summit is a wonderful town at a difficult time. Unfortunately, some of the difficulties we face here are self-inflicted, brought on by stridency and divisiveness among a few of our elected officials. This has not only been brutal for those involved it has taken up time and energy that is better used to address the challenges of the current economic climate and to forge a successful future for the families and businesses that call Summit home . We need to change this situation. Sandy Bloom can help. Sandy has a deep and broad record of service and leadership in …

Letter to the Editor: Taxes, Taxes, Taxes

We need a Mayor and Common Council who can have a dialogue with the county.

Dear Neighbors, There are many issues we care about in Summit.  Traffic, safety, schools, trash, parking, drainage, recycling and more.  All of the issues are important, yet the number one concern for most residents is taxes, and the rate at which they keep rising: School Taxes, City Taxes, County Taxes. We need to better control taxes across the board.   The current Council has focused almost exclusively on school and city taxes.  But, the fact is, we can no longer ignore, or worse, alienate the folks who hold the purse strings in Union County.  I believe I am better prepared and positioned than either of my opponents to deliver improvements on county Taxes.   My opponent, Michael Vernotico, has in the past called for elimination of …

Letter to the Editor: Our TV Shouldn't Skip Debate

Summit's public access channel should step up for Oct. 29 event.

I am the communications director for the Summit Democrats campaign. More importantly, I am a citizen of Summit who depends upon our local paper, the Independent Press (both in print and online); our online papers, The Alternative Press and Summit Patch; and our community's public access, 501(c) 3 Hometowne TV  for news about Summit.   At this time, Summit is engaged in an important and unique local election — a once-in-four-years mayoral contest, featuring three candidates running for the first time in our community's recorded political history, and three Common Council seats:  Ward 1, Ward 2 and At Large. At this point, 16 days before the Nov. 8 Election, I know I speak for the Democratic candidates in thanking TAP, Patch and the IP for …

Letter to the Editor: Reprehensible Flyers Show Vernotico's Character

Attack letter sets the stage for mayoral debate.

To the Editor: The campaign flyers recently mailed to Summit residents by Michael Vernotico, are at the least very reprehensible in their accusations. They contain false and dangerous rhetoric against me. Furthermore his attacks and nasty allegations against me are untrue and insulting as those he made against Eileen Forman Ludden, who is also running for Mayor. It only serves to confirm the ugliness Summit residents have seen him demonstrate on Council and the public has been sickened by his diatribes. This sort of “campaign literature” is unbecoming a candidate for Mayor of the City of Summit, worse yet our Mayor for the next four years. In all my years of living and voting in Summit, never did I witness Janet Whitman, Walter Long, or …

Letter to the Editor: Vote for Dickson for Mayor

She has both the know-how and temperament to lead Summit.

I write to thank our candidates for office, but most particularly our three mayoral candidates, for their willingness to serve.  We should all be appreciative that they care enough about Summit to volunteer their time and talents.   But caring about Summit is not enough.  In these times of partisan gridlock we need elected officials who have both a depth of experience, and the ability to listen to differing views to make government function for all of us.  I have had occasion to work regularly with Councilwoman Ellen Dickson and Councilman Mike Vernotico in my work on behalf of the Planning Board (where I am currently chair) and numerous other governmental bodies ranging from the Transfer Station to Master Planning to Redevelopment to the …

Don't know that I've seen that many Mad Mike signs, but it's hard to argue that the Repub establishment is seeing a changing of the guard. Suppose that's why there is a completely new slate of candidates (albeit w/Ellen in a different slot) on that end? But then, that's not what you meant I guess.   more ›
