Hurricane Sandy: Eating During the Storm

How to keep the family fed when the power's out

As we are all preparing for a storm of epic proportions, it occurred to me that some suggestions on how to eat without electricity might be helpful.  Here are some foods that are easy and shelf-stable: If you have a gas stove top, despite not having use of the electric starter, you can use a match to light your stove.  Pasta, rice, soups and sauces can easily be heated up.  Stews and chilis can also be easily prepared.  Even popcorn can be made with oil in a covered pot for snacking. Wonder about your refrigerator and freezer?  According to the USDA, a full freezer will keep food cold for 48 hours if opened minimally.  A refrigerator will keep food cold for up to 4 hours.  You may put ice into your refrigerator to help keep the temperature…
