Summit High School Assistant Principal Anthony Akey Resigns

Akey served as assistant principal of SHS for 25 years.

Summit High School Assistant Principal Anthony Akey, who has spent more than three decades in the Summit school district, resigned his position, effective Jan. 31, 2014.

Akey, who began in the district as a Social Studies teacher in 1980, spent the past 25 years as SHS assistant principal. In 2006, Akey was offered the position of principal of Westfield High School, which he initially accepted but turned down days later due to the terms of the contract, which did not grant him tenure, according to The Westfield Leader.

SHS Principal Paul Sears said Friday morning he could not offer any comment on the "personnel matter" and said he would defer to Summit Schools Superintendent Dr. Nathan Parker, who was not immediately available for comment.

A message seeking comment was left for Akey at his home Friday morning. The call was not returned at press time.

Sears added that the job opening will be posted on the district's website imminently.
